This was a situation where a line of Western Red Cedar conifer trees(Thuja plicata), possibly planted as a hedge, had grown to an unmanageable size.
As well as slowly encroaching on the driveway, one tree, in particular, was overhanging the garage and getting close to the house. In this instance, the customer decided to have the trees removed and the stumps ground out.
Thuja are a popular variety of hedging and make a great alternative to Leylandii. They are slower growing than the former, have a particularly nice glossy green colouring, and are more tolerant to heavy pruning. In addition to being used to form a hedge, they also make nice individual trees when planted in an open space.
